Frequently Asked Questions

A work boot is chemical-resistant when it is molded from a non-porous polymer such as PVC or rubber, rather than leather, because the barrier material protects, not the lug-and-leather construction of a normal work boot.
Chemical resistant boots are made from PVC, natural rubber, nitrile, neoprene, or polyurethane. Each of these resists a different group of chemicals, so the material matters more than the brand name on the boot.
To match boot material to your chemicals, cross-reference the boot's material with your chemical's Safety Data Sheet, because no single material is truly chemical-proof. PVC generally handles many inorganic acids, alkalis, and oils, which is why it shows up so often in acid-proof boots for plating and battery work, but it tends to swell and fail in the presence of ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents. Nitrile typically holds up well to oils, fuels, and solvents, and neoprene usually handles mild acids, oils, and heat. Natural rubber can handle some acids and bases, but material compatibility depends on the exact chemical, concentration, temperature, and exposure time.
Leather work boots are not chemical resistant. Leather is porous, so acids, caustics, and solvents soak in and break the material down. Chemical work calls for a molded rubber, PVC, or other compatible polymer boot, as leather can absorb chemicals and degrade upon exposure.
Chemical resistant safety boots are worth it when you regularly come into contact with acids, caustics, solvents, or oils, because leather boots degrade under such exposure and stop protecting your feet. If your real hazard is water and mud rather than chemicals, a standard work boot with a waterproof membrane is enough.
Most chemical resistant work boots last about 6 to 12 months under daily chemical exposure. Heavy, sustained contact with caustics, solvents, or hot sanitizers can pull that down to 3 to 6 months, while light or occasional splash contact often stretches a pair past a year. Lifespan depends on the chemical, concentration, exposure time, cleaning routine, and whether the boot material is compatible with the hazard. Inspect the upper, outsole, seams, and shaft regularly for swelling, cracking, softening, or separation, and replace the boot as soon as any of those appear. You can stretch the upper end of that range by rinsing chemical residue off at the end of the shift and matching the boot material to your chemical.
Chemical resistant boots more often come with a steel safety toe than a composite one. The rubber boots built for chemical work here include the Matterhorn Mud Jumper and Muck Chore, both with steel toes, and the Matterhorn Muckmen 15", which offers a composite toe.
You need a knee-high boot when chemicals splash, pool, or are hosed across the floor, because a 15- to 16-inch shaft keeps liquid from running down into the boot. The Matterhorn Mud Jumper and Muck Chore run 15 to 16 inches for exactly this reason. For light, incidental contact, a lower boot or chemical resistant shoes can work, but they leave your shin and calf exposed.
Jobs that call for boots built to resist chemicals include chemical plant and refinery work, metal plating and battery shops, lab and pharmaceutical work, food and poultry processing, agriculture, sanitation and sewer work, and oil and gas, where crews want oil and gas work boots rated for constant fuel and solvent contact. In plating and battery work, acid proof boots are standard issue. The common thread is daily contact with acids, caustics, solvents, cleaning chemicals, or fuels that would break down a leather boot.
For chemical exposure, we carry rubber boots from Matterhorn, Muck, and Xtratuf. The Matterhorn line includes the Mud Jumper with a steel toe and metatarsal guard for heavy industrial work, and the Muckmen 15" with a composite toe option. The Muck Chore is built for wet, slip-heavy floors, and the Xtratuf Elite Legacy is insulated for cold, wet environments. Match the boot to your chemical first, then pick the brand whose features fit the job.
