Is the CA9853 waterproof?
The Poplar is unlined leather, built to breathe rather than to seal. It sheds a light shower, and conditioning the upper a few times a year improves its water resistance. For sustained wet, the soft-toe CA9052 carries Carolina's sealed SCUBALINER™.
Can it be resoled?
Yes. Welt construction stitches the lug outsole to the upper rather than bonding it. On a logger — where the sole almost always wears out before the leather — that's what decides how long the boot lasts.
What actually makes a boot a “logger”?
The heel and the shank. A logger has a raised, tapered heel that digs into slopes and catches ladder rungs, an aggressive lug tread, and a stiff shank so your arch doesn't collapse on a narrow edge. On flat concrete all day, a wedge sole is more comfortable.
Why a composite toe on a logger?
It meets the same ASTM impact and compression thresholds as steel while weighing less — worth having on a welted 8" boot — and it doesn't conduct cold into the toe box on a winter morning.
Is it insulated?
The CA9853 is unlined and uninsulated, which is what makes it a genuinely cool boot for warm-weather work. For cold conditions, Carolina builds insulated loggers rated by gram weight.
Does the EH rating still apply when the boots are wet?
Treat it as reduced — and this matters more on an unlined boot. EH testing is performed under dry conditions, and without a membrane the leather wets through more readily, degrading insulation. EH footwear is secondary protection — never a substitute for de-energizing a circuit or using primary PPE.
