Frequently Asked Questions
In Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, where Carolina has operated since 1955. It is the same factory behind the Amp, Ferric, Sarge, INT, and Domestic families you see in this collection. The rest of Carolina's catalog is imported, so the domestic line is a specific subset rather than the whole brand. Country of origin is listed on every product page.
Not automatically, and the distinction matters if you are buying against a requirement. Under the FTC standard, an unqualified Made in USA claim means all or virtually all of the product is of domestic origin. That is a high bar but not literally 100 percent, and it is a different standard from Berry compliance, which government procurement uses and which demands domestic sourcing down to the raw material. If you need one specifically, check the spec on the model rather than assuming from the other.
The Goodyear welted ones can, and several models here are built that way, including the Amp 8-inch, the Amp waterproof, and the Union Built Amp. A Goodyear welt stitches the upper to a welt strip rather than gluing it to the sole, so a cobbler can pull a worn outsole and stitch on a new one while the upper keeps going. Construction is listed per model on the product page.
It depends on what you are buying for. If your employer or a government contract requires domestic footwear, the question answers itself. If you are choosing freely, the case is that these are traditional builds using patterns refined over decades, and the Goodyear welted models can be resoled rather than replaced, which changes the math over several years. If you need a lightweight composite toe or a specific waterproof build, the imported range simply offers more choice.
The sole, mainly. The Amp family sits on a flat wedge outsole, which spreads your weight and suits pavement, shop floors, and flat ground. The Ferric uses a standard lugged outsole with more bite for uneven surfaces. Both come as moc toes in soft and steel toe, and both are built in Martinsburg, so the choice comes down to what you are standing on all day.
Heel seated with minimal lift, and clear room ahead of your toes, especially on the steel toe models where the cap does not flex. Traditional leather boots break in and mold to the foot over the first few weeks, so a boot that is snug across the instep will relax, but one that is short in the toe never will. Wide widths are available across most of this collection, and width is usually the better fix than length.
