What Is ESD Protection and Who Needs It?

ESD stands for electrostatic dissipative, and it does the opposite of what people often assume. Rather than insulating you from electricity, an ESD shoe bleeds static charge off your body into the floor at a controlled rate. That protects sensitive electronics and, in the right setting, prevents a spark. It's what electronics assembly, cleanrooms, and many warehouses require. Note that ESD and electrical hazard (EH) are different, opposing ratings under ASTM F2413 — one drains charge, the other blocks it — so check the product page for which one a shoe carries rather than assuming it has both.

Are Carolina Work Shoes Safety Rated?

Nearly all of them. Most of this collection meets ASTM F2413 for impact and compression, using aluminum, composite, carbon, or steel toes depending on the model. The exception is the women's Align Talux clog, which is built as a slip-resistant shoe without a rated toe — the right call for kitchen, healthcare, and hospitality work where slips are the actual hazard.
