Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the site and the task. A rated work shoe gives you the same ASTM F2413 toe protection as a boot, so the toe is not the issue. What you give up is ankle support on uneven ground and coverage against debris, sparks, and water. Many sites require a boot for that reason. Check your site rules first, and treat a work shoe as the indoor or finished-floor option.
For the purposes of the rating, yes. Aluminum toes meet the same ASTM F2413 impact and compression thresholds that steel does, which means they pass the same tests at the same levels. The difference is weight: aluminum gets there with noticeably less mass, which is why it shows up across the S-117, Gust, Derecho, and Lytning models. Steel remains the lowest-cost route to the rating.
A Romeo is a low slip-on with elastic gores at each side and no laces, cut below the ankle. The design goes back well over a century, and it survives because it is the fastest footwear to get on and off while still being a real leather shoe. In this collection the S-117 Romeo and the Romeo Force cover it, both with rated toes, which makes them popular anywhere boots come off and on repeatedly.
The Braze oxford, the Stabline slip-on, and the Workline oxford are built as non-metallic shoes. That matters at screened entries such as courthouses, secure facilities, and airports, and around magnetic-sensitive equipment. Be aware that a composite toe alone does not make a whole shoe non-metallic, since the shank can still be steel, so look for a stated non-metallic build rather than inferring it from the toe.
Because there is no shaft to help hold your foot, fit through the heel and the instep does all the work in a shoe. You want the heel seated with minimal lift when you walk and enough room that your toes never touch the safety cap, which does not flex. Feet swell across a shift, so if you are between sizes and stand all day, the larger size is usually the better call.
Yes. The women's range covers the S-117 in a Romeo, an oxford, and a slip-on, all with aluminum toes and ESD protection, plus the Align Talux clog for slip resistance without a rated toe. Sizing and available widths are listed on each product page.
