Steel vs. Nano Toe Composite: What's the Real Difference?

Weight and temperature transfer, not protection level. Both meet the same ASTM F2413 impact and compression standard. Steel is the traditional choice on the American Heritage and 1957 Series and tends to run heavier while conducting hot and cold through the boot. Nano Toe is Thorogood's own composite technology, built thinner and lighter than a typical composite cap, and it won't trigger a metal detector, which matters for screened job sites.

What Does ASTM F2413 Actually Require?

Two mechanical tests applied the same way regardless of toe material. Impact resistance rated I/75 means the toe withstands a 75 foot-pound strike, roughly a 50-pound weight dropped from 18 inches. Compression resistance rated C/75 means it holds up under 2,500 pounds of steady load. That's the baseline for every rated boot in this collection.
