Frequently Asked Questions

Combat boots are built to a uniform specification and to survive sustained field use, with an 8-inch shaft for ankle support under load, a tougher upper, and construction that tolerates abuse a hiking boot is not designed for. Hiking boots are lighter and often more comfortable over distance. The trade is durability and regulation compliance against weight and out-of-the-box comfort.

A jungle boot is built for hot, wet environments, with drainage ports in the sides so water that gets in can get out again, canvas or nylon panels for airflow and fast drying, and a sole designed to shed mud. It is the opposite design philosophy from a waterproof boot: instead of keeping water out, it accepts that water will get in and gets rid of it quickly.

It depends entirely on your climate. In cold and wet conditions a Gore-Tex or membrane boot keeps you dry and is the right call. In hot and wet conditions a waterproof boot traps sweat and, once water gets over the collar, holds it against your foot, which is how you get trench foot. Hot and wet calls for drainage, not sealing.

Coyote brown is the standard for current Army and Air Force uniform wear, and black remains standard for some roles and for law enforcement. Regulations also specify height, finish, and sometimes construction details, and they are revised periodically. Confirm your branch's current regulation rather than relying on what was permitted in a previous revision. See our U.S. Army boots range.

Most are soft toe, since field mobility matters more than crush protection and a rated cap adds weight where it costs the most. Steel and composite versions exist for roles involving equipment and materiel handling. Toe type is stated in every product title, so check rather than assuming either way.

Wear them progressively over two to three weeks rather than straight into a long day, and use the socks you will actually wear, since sock thickness meaningfully changes fit. Modern lightweight boots need far less break-in than traditional all-leather ones. Blisters in the first week usually mean a fit problem rather than a break-in problem, and are worth resolving with an exchange rather than persistence.

Eight inches is the standard and it is what most regulations specify. The height braces the ankle under load, which matters when you carry weight over uneven ground, and keeps debris out. Some roles permit shorter boots and hot-weather models sometimes run lower. Height is stated in every product title.

They are required for footwear purchased with Department of Defense funds, which covers issued boots and some allowance purchases. If you are buying with your own money for personal use, the requirement does not apply, though many people choose Berry compliant boots anyway for the domestic manufacturing. See our Berry compliant boots range.
