Metatarsal guards usually arrive bolted to a heavy boot, because a rigid plate needs a rigid platform. XRD® changes that. It's a foam — soft and breathable to the touch — whose cells lock together under sudden load, absorbing and spreading impact. That lets the guard sit inside a mid-cut athletic shoe instead of strapped over the laces.
Nothing Metal in the Toe, the Arch, or the Guard
Composite toe, composite shank, XRD® foam guard. All three of the components that are usually steel are not steel here, which is much of why this shoe weighs what it does. Its stablemate the CA1906 uses an aluminum toe cap instead.
What a Metatarsal Guard Actually Protects
A safety toe covers the toes and nothing else. The metatarsals — the long bones running from your toes back toward the ankle — sit exposed under thin leather on an ordinary shoe. A dropped die, a rolled pipe, or a load slipping off a forklift lands there.

A rate-sensitive foam. Soft, thin, and breathable under normal movement, it stiffens instantly on impact to absorb and disperse force, and recovers afterward for repeated hits. XRD is a licensed trademark of Rogers Corporation.
Is any part of the protection metal?
The toe cap is composite, the shank is non-metallic, and the XRD® guard is a foam — none of the three is metal. Carolina does not publish the lace hardware material, so if you need a fully metal-free shoe for a detector-controlled access point, confirm before ordering.
How is the CA1907 different from the CA1906?
Two things: the CA1907 adds a waterproof SCUBALINER™ membrane, and it uses a composite toe cap where the CA1906 uses aluminum. Same XRD® met guard, same non-metallic shank, same outsole.
How does cement construction affect the shoe?
The outsole is bonded directly to the upper rather than stitched through a welt, which keeps the shoe light and lets it flex from the first day, with no break-in underfoot.
