Frequently Asked Questions

The upper material and the lining. Mesh and synthetic panels move air directly, unlined leather passes some vapor through the hide, and moisture-wicking linings pull sweat away from the skin so it can evaporate. A sealed waterproof membrane restricts all of this by design, which is the fundamental trade in the category.

To a degree, and that is what a waterproof breathable membrane like Gore-Tex is for. The membrane blocks liquid while letting vapor pass, driven by the humidity difference across it. That works well in cold dry air and poorly in hot humid air, where the outside is already saturated and the vapor has nowhere to go. It is a compromise rather than having both fully.

Feet produce a surprising amount of moisture over a shift, and a boot restricts where it can go. Waterproof membranes, thick insulation you do not need, and non-breathable synthetic linings all make it worse. Socks matter too: cotton holds moisture against the skin while merino wool wicks it away and keeps insulating when damp.

More than people realize. If sweat saturates your insulation it stops working, and you end up cold in a boot you bought to be warm. That is why matching insulation to activity matters and why moisture-wicking linings appear in cold-weather boots. Damp feet get cold far faster than dry ones at the same temperature.

Merino wool for most conditions, because it wicks moisture off the skin, keeps insulating when damp, and resists odor. Synthetic blends work similarly. Cotton is the one to avoid, since it absorbs sweat and holds it against your foot, which is how blisters start. Sock choice can undo a breathable boot entirely. See our work socks range.

Often, since mesh and lightweight synthetic panels do not resist abrasion the way full-grain leather does. If your work is hard on uppers, a breathable athletic-style boot will wear out faster. Unlined or lightly lined leather is the middle ground: it breathes better than a membrane boot while keeping leather's toughness.

Dry them fully between wears, which usually means rotating two pairs, since a boot worn daily never dries out and bacteria thrive in the damp. Pull the footbeds out to dry separately, use wool or synthetic socks rather than cotton, and let boots air rather than sealing them in a locker. Odor is a moisture problem before it is a hygiene one.

Uninsulated, unlined or mesh-panelled footwear with no waterproof membrane, and a lower cut if your work allows it, since less shaft means more airflow. Ventilated models with perforated panels exist specifically for heat. See our hot weather work boots range.
