What makes a work boot slip resistant?

Two things working together. The compound has to be soft enough to deform slightly and grip the surface, and the tread has to channel liquid out from under the boot so the rubber can reach the floor. Deep aggressive lugs are for mud and loose ground and are not what grips wet tile. Fine siping and a flat contact patch are what work indoors, which is why a logger sole is worse on a wet kitchen floor than a flat work sole.

Are all work boots slip resistant?

No, and assuming so is a common mistake. Slip resistance is a specific rating applied to the outsole and it varies between models within a single brand and even between colorways of the same model. If your employer requires it, confirm it on the product page for the exact model you are ordering rather than relying on the fact that it is a work boot.

What is the difference between slip resistant and oil resistant?

Oil resistance means the outsole compound will not break down, swell, or degrade when it sits in oil, which is about the sole surviving. Slip resistance is about grip on a contaminated surface. A sole can resist oil chemically and still be slippery on it. Many work boots carry both, and if you work around oil you want both rather than either alone.

Do slip resistant boots work on ice?

Not reliably. Standard slip-resistant compounds are tested against wet and oily surfaces, not ice, and ice defeats the mechanism because there is no liquid film to channel away and nothing for the rubber to key into. Why do my slip resistant boots feel slippery now?

Almost always because the tread has worn smooth or the sole has glazed. A slip-resistant outsole works by channeling liquid, and once the channels are worn flat there is nowhere for the liquid to go. Glazing from heat or from polished floors has the same effect. Both happen gradually enough that people do not notice until they slip. Check the tread depth rather than waiting for the uppers to fail.

Are wedge soles or lugged soles better for slip resistance?

On smooth indoor floors, a wedge or flat sole is usually better, because maximum surface contact is what you want and deep lugs reduce the rubber actually touching the ground. On loose or muddy outdoor ground, lugs win outright, because they cut through the surface layer to find grip underneath. Can you make existing boots more slip resistant?

Not in a way that satisfies a workplace requirement. Adhesive grip pads and sprays exist and wear off quickly, and none of them is a rated modification. If your employer requires slip-resistant footwear, you need boots built and rated that way. A cobbler can resole a welted boot with a slip-resistant outsole, which is a genuine option if you have boots worth keeping.

Do slip resistant boots also have safety toes?

Many do, and the two ratings are independent of each other, since one is the sole and one is the toe. Plenty of slip-resistant footwear is soft toe, because food service and healthcare require grip without a crush hazard. Toe type is stated in every product title, so you can filter for the combination you actually need.

How do I know if a boot is slip resistant before buying?

Slip resistance is stated in the product title or specification on the models that carry it. Unlike EH and toe ratings it does not have a single universal ASTM code that appears on the label the same way, so manufacturers describe it in their own terms. If it is a compliance requirement for you, confirm it on the product page rather than judging by how aggressive the tread looks.
