Frequently Asked Questions

When you work in mud, snow, or standing water, when the ground is genuinely uneven, or when sparks and hot debris can land on your boot. The taller shaft keeps material out and braces the ankle where a rolled ankle is a real risk. On flat predictable ground it is weight and stiffness you gain nothing from.
They take longer, because there is more leather to soften and the shaft has to conform around your calf as well as your foot. Heavy USA-made models commonly take two to three weeks, with the flex point at the ankle the last part to give. Wear them in shorter stretches over the first week.
A darker-finished version of the classic American Heritage 8-inch, built on the same welt and wedge construction with a different leather package. The underlying boot is the same; the difference is appearance, which matters if your work has an appearance standard or you wear the boots off the clock.
Law enforcement, security and duty wear, built lighter than the traditional work boots with side-zip entry on several models so they go on quickly. They are a different product from the heritage work line despite sharing the brand. See our police boots range.
Many are, and status is stated in every product title. A waterproof boot only protects to its collar, so an 8-inch keeps you dry through eight inches of water and no further. If you routinely stand deeper, a rubber pull-on is the right tool. See our Thorogood waterproof range.
The wedge models are, since a flat sole spreads weight across the whole footprint. Height has little to do with concrete comfort; the sole is what matters. Most of Thorogood's 8-inch range uses the MAXwear wedge, which is why they suit hard flat ground. See our Thorogood wedge range.
The Goodyear welted models can, which covers most of the range, and Thorogood runs its own recrafting service. A welt lets a cobbler replace the outsole without disturbing the upper, and a good upper outlasts several soles. Check the construction on the product page.
Thorogood boots generally run about a half size large, so most buyers order a half size down. Widths run D and EE across most of the line. If you are between sizes it is usually better to drop the half size and take the wider width than to size up in length.
