Frequently Asked Questions

Match the gram weight to temperature and how much you move. Lighter insulation around 200g to 400g suits active hunts and early season, where your own movement keeps you warm and too much insulation makes you sweat. Heavier weights, 800g up through 1600g and 2000g, are for sitting still in genuine cold, like a late-season stand. The Danner Pronghorn, Rocky Core, and LaCrosse Alphaburly span the range, and gram weight is listed on every product page.
Thinsulate is a thin synthetic insulation that packs a lot of warmth into little bulk, which is why it shows up across the Danner and LaCrosse hunt boots here. A pac boot, like the Rocky Core Pac and LaCrosse Hunt Pac, uses a removable insulated liner inside a rubber or leather bottom for extreme cold. The removable liner is a real advantage, since you can pull it out to dry overnight.
Essentially all of them, and for a reason: wet insulation stops insulating. Damp fill loses most of its warmth, so a cold-weather boot has to keep water out to keep heat in, whether through a membrane, a GORE-TEX liner, or full rubber construction. That is why you will not find a serious insulated hunt boot that is not also waterproof.
Often by a half size, but not to fit the insulation, which is already built into the last. You are making room for a heavier hunting sock and for the toe splay that keeps blood moving, since circulation is what actually warms your feet. A boot crammed tight with a thick sock will leave you colder than a roomier one. Try it on with the sock you will actually hunt in.
Usually fit or moisture rather than the insulation weight. A boot laced too tight or crowded by a thick sock restricts circulation, and blood flow is what warms your toes. The other culprit is sweat, since damp insulation loses much of its value. Before buying heavier, loosen the fit, make room for the toes, and switch to a merino or wicking sock.
Slowly, with the insoles out and any removable pac liner pulled to dry separately. Insulated boots hold moisture longer because the fill absorbs sweat, so a boot that feels dry on the surface can still be damp inside. Leave them at room temperature with airflow or use a low-temperature boot dryer, and never park them by a fire or heater, which cracks leather and can damage the boot.
