A layering system: an outer shell and a removable inner layer that can be worn together or separately. A 3-in-1 gives you shell, liner, or both. A 5-in-1 adds removable sleeves and extra configurations, so one purchase covers most of the year. On hi-vis systems, check which layers carry the class rating on their own.

A class-rated hi-vis jacket does the same job as a vest of the same class and saves you layering one over the other. It also solves the common winter problem of a vest hidden under a dark coat. Confirm the jacket's class on the product page matches what your site requires. See our Portwest hi-vis range.

Active work in cool, dry-to-damp weather. Softshells stretch, breathe and block wind while shedding light rain, so you can move and work hard without overheating. For sustained rain, a waterproof shell with sealed seams is the better choice. For deep cold, a parka or insulated bomber.

A jacket that is itself flame resistant rated, since a standard synthetic jacket over FR clothing can melt or ignite. Portwest's Bizflame and Sealtex Flame jackets combine flame resistance with hi-vis and weather protection. See our Portwest flame resistant clothing range.

A waterproof jacket uses a sealed membrane or coating with taped seams, so rain cannot work through the fabric or the stitching. Water-resistant fabric sheds light rain and damp but wets through with sustained exposure. For all-day rain work, choose waterproof and check that the seams are taped.

With room to reach overhead and cross your arms without the back pulling tight or the hem riding up past your belt. Leave space for the layers you will wear underneath in the coldest part of the season. Sleeves should cover the wrist bone when your arms are extended.

Length and cut. A bomber is waist length with a gathered hem that keeps drafts out and stays clear of your tool belt. A traffic jacket is longer, covering the hips and more of the body, which also adds more visible area for roadway work. Both come in class-rated hi-vis.
