The shape is the same and everything underneath is different. A western work boot adds an ASTM-rated safety toe on the rated models, a work outsole built for traction on the ground, and often an electrical hazard rating and a cushioned footbed. A traditional cowboy boot has a smooth leather sole designed to slide in and out of a stirrup, which is a safety feature when riding and a hazard on a wet shop floor.

With real caution. The gripping work outsole that makes these good on the ground is exactly what you do not want in a stirrup, since a smooth sole is what lets your foot slide free if you come off. If you ride regularly, that deserves genuine thought rather than assuming a western-shaped boot is a riding boot.

Square gives more room across the ball of the foot and is the broader traditional working silhouette. Round and roper toes fit closer and slide into a stirrup more easily. More than on almost any other style, because a pull-on has no lacing to compensate for a heel that is too wide. A men's boot sized down leaves the heel loose and there is nothing to correct it, so your foot lifts with every step. That is the single most common complaint from women wearing men's western boots.

Some do, in steel, composite, and carbon, meeting ASTM F2413 on the rated models, though the women's selection is narrower than the men's. Plenty are soft toe for ranch and everyday wear. The silhouette gives no clue whether a cap is inside, so toe type is stated in every product title.

Snug at the heel with the instep holding you in place. Some heel movement when new is normal and settles as the leather takes your shape. If your heel lifts clear or your toes reach the end, the boot is too long, and since there is no lacing the fix is a shorter size rather than breaking them in.

It depends on the sole. A defined western heel concentrates your weight in a way that tires you on flat concrete. Several brands build western work boots on flatter work outsoles specifically to solve that, and those are far better on a plant floor. Look for the flat-soled versions if you are not on a ranch.

Eleven inches is the traditional working height and keeps mud, debris, and light water out while covering the calf against brush. Shorter 8-inch versions are easier to walk and drive in. Some tall pull-ons are also offered in wide calf, which is worth checking since a fixed shaft has no lacing to open it up.
