Match it to your ground and your load. The Trail 2650 family is the lightest and fastest, built for maintained trails and day hiking. The Mountain 600 sits in the middle with more support for mixed terrain. The USA-made Mountain Light II is the heaviest and most supportive, built for carrying weight over rough ground, and it is rebuildable. More boot than your terrain needs is weight you pay for with every step.

Stitchdown turns the upper leather outward at the base and stitches it directly to the midsole, which creates a wide, stable platform and allows the boot to be rebuilt. Danner uses it on the USA-made models including the Mountain Light and Explorer. It is the reason those boots can be recrafted rather than replaced, and Danner operates its own recrafting service.

The Mountain Light II, Light II, and Explorer 650 are the domestically built models in the current hiking range, and they say so in the product title. The rest of the line is manufactured overseas. Because both sit in the same collection, check the specific product page rather than assuming. See our American made boots collection.

Many are, and Danner has a long association with Gore-Tex specifically rather than house-brand membranes. Some models are deliberately non-waterproof for hot and dry conditions, where a membrane traps sweat and slows drying. Waterproof status is stated in every product title. See our waterproof hiking boots range.

The lighter synthetic models like the Trail 2650 need almost none and are comfortable out of the box. The full-grain leather stitchdown boots such as the Mountain Light take two to three weeks of real walking. Break them in before a trip rather than during it, and walk actual distance, because problems appear at mile four rather than mile one.

The stitchdown models can, and Danner runs its own recrafting program that replaces the outsole and midsole and reconditions the leather. Cemented lightweight models cannot. If you hike enough to wear an outsole out in a season or two, a rebuildable boot works out considerably cheaper over its life than replacing a cheaper one repeatedly.

Generally true to size, though the traditional lasts on the USA-made models fit differently from the modern athletic ones, and many people find the heritage boots narrower through the instep. Leave about a thumb's width in front of your longest toe, since your foot slides forward on descents. Available sizes and widths are listed on each product page.

Yes, including the Trail 2650 and Jag II in women's builds, on women's lasts rather than sized down from men's boots. A women's last is narrower through the heel and higher at the arch, which is what prevents the heel slip that causes blisters over distance. See our women's hiking boots range.
